Local study · 17 September 2026

The typical local business website takes 8.4 seconds to show in Google's phone test.

We loaded the websites of 89 businesses in Berwick, Cranbourne, Narre Warren and Pakenham, 41 clinics and 48 trades, the way a customer's phone would, and checked the things that decide whether a customer who finds them gets through: does the site open, how long it takes, and whether a phone can dial the number with one tap. 2 of 85 were fast by Google's own measure.

Is yours one of them?

Run the same test on your own site.

We do not name the businesses in this study. The free check runs exactly these tests on any site in about ten seconds, tells you what holds and what leaks, and emails the phone speed result.

After the site, the phone

You have read the median. Now hear your own front desk.

A quick site still ends in a call somebody has to answer, and half of these businesses answer it off a ladder. Give us your website address and about a minute: we read it, hand it to an AI receptionist and you ring your own front desk — your jobs, only the prices your site prints, your hours — with the job sheet filling in the way it would reach you. Nothing is charged and nobody is called.

We read your site, hand it to the receptionist and you ring it, in about a minute. No name, no email, nothing charged, nobody called.

Or hear it answer as a made-up business.

How we did it

Who was checked. For each of 8 categories (chiropractor, dentist, electrician, landscaper, physiotherapist, plumber, podiatrist and roofer) in each of 4 suburbs (Berwick, Cranbourne, Narre Warren and Pakenham), we searched the web for the category and suburb and took the first three businesses in the results with their own website. We skipped directory listings, national chains and franchise networks, and businesses already picked up under another suburb. Where fewer than three qualified, we took fewer. It is a sample of the businesses a customer searching would find first, not a census.

What was measured. Each home page was fetched once as a phone browser and read for a tap-to-call link, the numbers printed on the page, analytics tags, online booking or quote forms, and the footer year. Three of the 278 sites send an almost empty page that JavaScript fills in afterwards; those were read again after a browser had drawn them, which on 18 September 2026 moved each figure they touch by one site. Speed is Google's Lighthouse 12, mobile profile (a mid-range phone on a throttled 4G connection), one run per site from Melbourne. "Time to show" is Largest Contentful Paint, the moment the main part of the page appears. Google rates 2.5 seconds or less as good.

Limits. Lighthouse is a lab test: a real customer on fast Wi-Fi will see a site sooner, one on a weak signal later, and a single run can vary by a second or so either way. Only home pages were tested. A site that did not open on the first try was tried again later; the second result is the one counted.
